Piper turns 18 months old today.
She…

• weighs 29.3 pounds
• wears size 5 diapers
• wears mostly size 18-24 months clothes
• wears size 6 shoes
• has 12 teeth
• is now sitting forward facing in the car seat (with her pediatrician’s approval of course)
• can say over 50 words
• likes: dancing, saying “hi” to people, when daddy juggles
• dislikes: home phone ringing, sleeping on long trips in the car, and people coming to the door

Piper has always liked books and she likes when my dad (Poppy) reads to her. Well, after one book at their house had been read too many times, Poppy turned to the old encyclopedias from the shelf. He showed her all the pictures of the different kinds of fish and all the dogs. She loved it, and now she asks for them whenever she is there. Hopefully some of the info is still accurate.

Piper turns 17 months old today.
She…

• has 12 teeth
• can slide down a slide by herself
• has started saying “mommy” instead of “mama”- I love it!
• tries to put her shoes and socks on
• has added “button”, “sticker”, “Piper”, “fish”, “bird”, “teeth”, “cheese”, “Elmo”, and a few others to her vocabulary
• likes: carrying around a purse (or bag of some kind), Easter egg hunts, putting on lotion/ hand sanitizer
• dislikes: napping in the afternoon sometimes

Piper has impressed several people with her knowledge of colors, but the truth is, when asked what color something is, she always says “purple” . It just so happens that that has been the first color a few people have asked her. It does seem impressive that a 17 month-old can not only recognize but also verbalize the color that they see. Yeah, that would be impressive. But with Piper, it’s just luck that you asked the right color.

Piper turns 16 months old today.
She…

• wears mostly size 18 months clothes
• wears size 5 shoes
• has 12 teeth
• is getting better at using a fork and spoon to eat
• can identify lots of items in books
• makes faces like she is confused or mad
• wears her hair in a ponytail most of the time and is much better about keeping in bows
  
• can follow simple instructions like go sit in your chair or put that in the basket
• has added “wa-wa” (water), “baby”, “shoes”, and “banana” to her vocabulary
• likes: closing doors, reading books, pushing buttons, baths in the big tub
• dislikes: getting her teeth brushed

We’ve shared the good news with Piper that she is going to be a big sister. Although I don’t think she knows what is going on, when I ask her where the baby is, she is able to point to my belly and say “baby”. Only on occasion now does she point to her own belly.

• likes: Katy Perry’s ‘Roar’, keys, giving hugs and kisses, Mimi and Nana, turning the water on in the bathtub, pulling clothes out of drawers and the laundry basket, climbing stairs
• dislikes: being tired, being sick

Piper really likes to eat/snack. She signs for food pretty much all day long. At daycare, the teacher said she will eat as much of her lunch as she wants and then she will go around to the other kids and sign “food” and “more” to them. One day, they moved her away to the corner and she just made her way back to the table to ask for more food. Apparently, sometimes it works.

• knows where her nose, toes, feet, and ears are
• is signing more- mostly things associated with food
• likes: remotes, giving kisses, backing in to a chair, surprising Mommy and Daddy from behind, getting tickled
• dislikes: being put to bed before she is tired, the changing table

When Piper returned to daycare after Christmas break, she became a “brown bear.” This means new adventures like napping on a mat and sitting at a table for snack. One day this week, Piper got there after snack had started. While Chad was putting up her coat and stuff, Piper walked over to a little girl sitting at the table. The girl pulled out the chair next to her and patted it as if to invite Piper to sit there. I mean, how sweet it that? I’m glad my big girl is making friends!

• has 8 teeth
• knows where her head and belly are
• holds up 1 finger when asked how old she is
• likes: oranges (more like loves!), walking around carrying things, little bottles of hand sanitizer, pulling items out of drawers, cabinets, and laundry baskets
• dislikes: getting her hands and face wiped after eating, having things taken away

One year ago today was my first “watch me grow” post. It is so sweet to think back to that time last year when we were just meeting Piper and couldn’t imagine how the next 12 months would go. It has been amazing and now, as I think about it, I get a little sad. I even asked Chad if I could still categorize these posts under “baby.” I think I will for a while. She’ll always be our baby, right?

On another note, she has her first Christmas program at daycare tomorrow…I’m expecting a solo or 2 from Piper.

This past Saturday was her first birthday party! The theme was bananas because she’s always really liked bananas. Piper had a fun time, got a lot of wonderful presents, and really liked eating cake.

•  has taken her first steps
• can put objects in things (like a ball in a cup, for example)
• has added sounds “yo,” “woah,” “wow,” “pa,” “na,” and “es”
• likes: her hair brush and comb, the end table in the living room, travel packs of tissues, being tickled, feeding herself, balls, peek-a-boo, books
• dislikes: socks, dogs that are too close, not being able to roam free

We all know that Chad looks best when his hair is shorter, but for some reason, it always seems to get pretty long in between cuts. One day recently, shaggy Chad got a hair cut while Piper was at day care. When he went to pick her up, she didn’t recognize him. Normally, she gets all excited and crawls straight to him, but this time, she looked at him funny and one of the teachers had to carry her over to him. Let this be encouragement for Chad to keep his hair short.

• can stand by herself for about 1 second
• can drink from a sippy cup
• pulls up all the time
• makes a duck face
• can make sounds “ma,” “ba,” “da,” “th,” and “na”
• likes: remotes, keys, wires, bananas, babbling, swimming, peek-a-boo
• dislikes: getting her diaper changed, when mommy or daddy leave a room, having things taken from her

There were a couple times we (okay, I) put shoes on Piper if they looked cute with her outfit, but for the most part, she has just gone without… especially once the weather got warm. And when spring and summer came around, I bought her some sandals, but she kept curling her toes and her pinky toes  would end up hanging out, so I quit putting her in them. Well, now that Piper is standing and getting close to walking, I thought she needed to wear some real shoes. I went to her shoe basket only to find she had outgrown them all already (without wearing most of them) so I went and bought her a pair. She was hilarious. She whined and looked at them funny, kicked, and tried to take them off. I would try to stand her up and she would act like her feet were broken. I thought Oops. Maybe we should have tried these things a little sooner. She is getting used to them now, but it was quite an experience for her for a little bit. I hope there isn’t some other basic parenting thing that I’m forgetting…

Piper turns 9 months old today.

• eats stage 3 foods and a few table foods
• crawls
• can wave and clap
• can pull herself up to standing
• has 3 teeth (maybe more coming through)
• likes: buttons, eating hair, crawling over people, Daddy, remotes
• dislikes: getting her face wiped, getting her nose sucked when snotty, Mommy going back to work

It has been kind of a running joke that Piper is the only baby wherever she goes. Usually, she is just the first one there and she plays by herself until others finally come. Well, this week, Piper truly was the lone baby. Last Saturday, we went to a music class open house and were the only ones to show up. We still went through the entire session- just me, Piper, and the instructor. Monday was Piper’s first day at her new daycare. She is a blue guppy… the only blue guppy. Apparently there are more who plan to come, but I think their moms are still on maternity leave. In the meantime, she gets extra attention from her 2 teachers and most days goes to play with the brown bears (12-18 months).
