Book It!

To go along with David’s post I wanted to mention some books I have read this year.

I finished this book in Jan, but started it about 5 months earlier. It was a pretty good read. It got me in the mood to hike the Appalachian Trail. But then I got sleepy.

I have read the other Dan Brown books and really enjoyed them. This one was pretty good, but the others were better I thought. This only took me 2 weeks to read, but that is because the library had a gun to my head.

Here are some that are next on my list.

I’m with Coco.

I love Conan. This stuff with NBC is depressing. (*edit – When I say depressing, I don’t mean on any sort of real scale. The guy is still worth millions and could never work again in his life. It is depressing in the way that he seems like a genuinely nice guy who really wanted that job as it was intended.)

His statement he made yesterday is below.

People of Earth:

In the last few days, I’ve been getting a lot of sympathy calls, and I want to start by making it clear that no one should waste a second feeling sorry for me. For 17 years, I’ve been getting paid to do what I love most and, in a world with real problems, I’ve been absurdly lucky. That said, I’ve been suddenly put in a very public predicament and my bosses are demanding an immediate decision.

Six years ago, I signed a contract with NBC to take over “The Tonight Show” in June of 2009. Like a lot of us, I grew up watching Johnny Carson every night and the chance to one day sit in that chair has meant everything to me. I worked long and hard to get that opportunity, passed up far more lucrative offers, and since 2004, I have spent literally hundreds of hours thinking of ways to extend the franchise long into the future. It was my mistaken belief that, like my predecessor, I would have the benefit of some time and, just as important, some degree of ratings support from the prime-time schedule. Building a lasting audience at 11:30 is impossible without both.

But sadly, we were never given that chance. After only seven months, with my “Tonight Show” in its infancy, NBC has decided to react to their terrible difficulties in prime time by making a change in their long-established late night schedule.

Last Thursday, NBC executives told me they intended to move the “Tonight Show” to 12:05 to accommodate the “Jay Leno Show” at 11:35. For 60 years, the “Tonight Show” has aired immediately following the late local news. I sincerely believe that delaying the “Tonight Show” into the next day to accommodate another comedy program will seriously damage what I consider to be the greatest franchise in the history of broadcasting. The “Tonight Show” at 12:05 simply isn’t the “Tonight Show.” Also, if I accept this move I will be knocking the “Late Night” show, which I inherited from David Letterman and passed on to Jimmy Fallon, out of its long-held time slot. That would hurt the other NBC franchise that I love, and it would be unfair to Jimmy.

So it has come to this: I cannot express in words how much I enjoy hosting this program and what an enormous personal disappointment it is for me to consider losing it. My staff and I have worked unbelievably hard, and we are very proud of our contribution to the legacy of “The Tonight Show.” But I cannot participate in what I honestly believe is its destruction. Some people will make the argument that with DVRs and the Internet, a time slot doesn’t matter. But with the “Tonight Show,” I believe nothing could matter more.

There has been speculation about my going to another network but, to set the record straight, I currently have no other offer and honestly have no idea what happens next. My hope is that NBC and I can resolve this quickly so that my staff, crew, and I can do a show we can be proud of, for a company that values our work.

Have a great day and, for the record, I am truly sorry about my hair; it’s always been that way.

Yours,

Conan

Christmas Earrings

You may recall that Chad got me some beautiful diamond earrings for Christmas.  Some may also know that we have a ring holder in our bathroom that we keep our wedding rings on when we aren’t wearing them.  Well, I decided that this would be the perfect place to keep the earrings because of its convenient location and the fact that I will wear these earrings more often then any others.  Chad was able to foresee a problem with this.  “I think we should move that ring holder,” he said.  “We wouldn’t want to knock it over and one of those go down the drain.”

Nonsense, I thought, and went about my normal jewelry routine.  Well, you see, there was one problem with my thinking.  One of our sinks had been dripping, so Chad turned the water off until it was fixed and had to use the sink on my side instead.

Wouldn’t you know it?  One day, I get the email at school: Jennie, I knocked over the ring holder.  But it’s not what you think.  The earrings did not go down the drain.  No.  They fell to the floor.  However, one of the the earrings went right down a vent that is directly next to our sink.  Oops.  Chad looked but could not see it.  He thought maybe it was somewhere on the floor or maybe rolled into the closet.  He took off the vent cover and looked, but could not see it.  This was less than 2 weeks after I got the earrings, and I knew it would be at least 2 years for me to get any more if they were really gone.  Chad didn’t have much time to look because he had to go to work, so there was still hope that the earring wasn’t long gone.

Chad mentioned that if it had gone all the way down the vent, he would not go under the house to try to find it.  For my engagement ring, it would be an option, but this earring was not worth it.  When I got home, I was hopeful.  Then, I saw what was under the vent grate.  I didn’t realize the it went almost straight down.  Almost!  I looked at some dust and other small particles that had gathered in there, but could not see an earring.  I took a flashlight and searched down the vent and there it was! It was inches from falling over the edge never to be seen again.  I carefully took my hand and felt my way around until I reached it, pulling the earring to safety.

Whew! That was great news.  I knew that Chad would be so disappointed that such a new (and nice)  gift had been lost so soon, and he would have been even more upset because he had already mentioned that the ring holder was in a bad location.  Fortunately, all is well in the land of white gold and diamonds.  I have my rings and my beautiful new earrings and our ring holder now sits safely in our closet.

Winter…Brrrr

We didn’t get that much snow, but it was enough to make the town of Bowling Green pretty white… and enough to get me 3 snow days so far.  This allows for more time to blog.

The heat in our house hasn’t appreciated the cold temperatures.  It refuses to get above 65 degrees on its own.  We keep a small space heater in our room and light fires when we are home.  We’ve also kind of shut off the guest room and office, and the bonus room is unoccupied as usual.

One snow day, I left the fire burning for a long while.  It got pretty warm in the living room, but trust me, it was not 78 degrees in the whole house.

Christmas ’09

Chad and I are super blessed to have another great Christmas time together.

At school, I got more presents than ever from my students.  The most popular gift to get Mrs. Webb this year?  A mug!  Whether filled with candy or part of a hot chocolate set, you apparently couldn’t go wrong with a mug.  I suppose that’s why I got 6 of them this year.  My favorite gift from a student was a chocolate pizza with chocolate, peanuts, marshmallows, cherries, and more.  It was fantastic, and I got the recipe too.  They were all very kind, but the most precious gift was lotion from a student whom the other teachers and I purchased clothes for.  One of the other teachers gave her a pack of 4 different kinds of lotions, and she gave each one of us a bottle.  It was so sweet because she didn’t know that we had given her the stuff, and she just wanted to be able to give us a gift.

Our first family Christmas function was the Sunday before at the Webbs’ in Hendersonville.  We got together to eat and play games.  We decided not to get each other gifts, but we got Brody something because he didn’t tell us not to.  Chad picked out a little outfit with little baby Jordans, a jersey, and a cap.   We also, along with Ashley and Brock, got Brad, Peggy, and Laura a calendar of Hawaii pictures of Brad.  It had kind of become a joke when we were on our cruise that Brad was posing for a calendar, so there were a lot of really good pictures for it.  Something fun was getting Chad’s baby book.  It was neat to look through and see all the details of when he was really little.  His mom did a good job of keeping up with all of that stuff.  I thought it was really funny that she had a baby shower on February 13th, the day before Chad was born.  Nothing like the last minute!

One of the greatest gifts to me was that Chad took the entire week of Christmas off so that we could spend it together.  He usually likes to work around that time because there aren’t a lot of other people working and there isn’t much going on.  So, I thought it was very nice that he took the time off while I was off work.  It was great sleeping in together and doing some last minute shopping.

On Monday, we had our small group over for a Christmas party.  We had lots of really good food and Jenny Borders even made a hot chocolate buffet with all kinds of fixings.  We played “dirty Santa,” where each couple brought a board game.  We brought Last Word.  We already have it, but we think it is pretty fun.  The funny thing is 2 other couples brought it too.  We ended up with Bop It.  I think Chad opened it and started playing with it before the “dirty Santa” was even over.

On Wednesday, Chad and I headed to Louisville to spend Christmas with my family.  On Christmas eve, my mom and dad had over my aunt and uncle and my grandma and uncle.  We ate all kinds of wonderful food and opened gifts.  For Christmas, our family decided to get my grandmother a new kitchen floor.  Obviously we couldn’t physically do that, so the plan was to give her a tile of flooring and a gift card to Home Depot.  Well, before Christmas, she decided to go purchase some flooring for her kitchen herself.  So, the plan changed and we decided that we should pay for the labor to have the flooring installed.  On Christmas eve, my sisters and I came up with a cute little poem to recite to her as she opened the tile.  She loved it!  She thought was so cute and sweet.  I don’t think an actual gift was needed at all.  It actually turns out that she had already had her new floor put in anyway, so she really just got a check that she can do whatever she wants with.

On Christmas day, we woke up at my parents’ house and opened presents with the family.  We had a lot of fun.  Chad and I got NFL snuggies for my dad and my sisters’ boyfriends (Brendan and Travis): Raiders for Dad and Bengals for Brendan and Travis.  By the way, don’t ever mention you like a particular sports team or our family will assume you want every type of paraphernalia for that team that was ever made.  Brendan got the family a game called Wits and Wagers, and we played that after eating lunch.  It was pretty fun.  Chad won both times.

Later that evening, my mom, Chad, and I went to see the movie “The Blindside.”  It was really good.  I have found that I get bored during a lot of movies, but I thought this was entertaining.  After the movie, we went over to Jill’s where the guys watched a football game and the girls played dominoes.   Nobody had eaten dinner, and we were getting a little hungry.  With our options few being it was Christmas day, my parents went home, and the rest of us went to Waffle House.  They seemed a little busy, but more so the people working there seemed to be at each others’ throats.  Everybody was really mean to our server.   I felt bad for him.

The next day, Chad and I went to Bed, Bath, and Beyond because he wanted to get a travel cup and we wanted this candle that was on sale.  It smells like peppermint patties.  Yum!  We also headed to the mall so I could make an exchange, and then we met Mom, Dad, Jessie, and Brendan at Olive Garden for lunch.  It had been a while since we had been there, and it was good!  After heading back to the house to get our things, Dad sewed a button on my coat for me and we left to go back to Bowling Green.  I later found a needle in the lining of my coat- my last little Christmas present from Dad.  Thanks again!

When we got home, Chad and I had our own little Christmas celebration.  We started the fire and opened our gifts from each other.  He got me some very nice earrings, but my favorite gift is a photo book he made of our first year of marriage.  We had talked about doing this on our anniversary, but we never got around to doing it.  It is so sweet.  I hope we can keep it up so that each year we will have kind of a memory book of our years of marriage. Chad was happy to receive from me clothes that actually fit him.  He has been giving away clothes that are too big, and his closet was getting very bare.  He was also excited about some new shorts for biking, swimming, and running.  Look forward to upcoming posts about tri-athlete Chad.

I’m still so amazed at how blessed I am to have such a great husband and a wonderful family.  Thank you to everyone for making this another special Christmas.

Halloween Treats

Last night, Chad and I celebrated halloween with our friends by inviting members of our Sunday school over.  Chad wore a Spiderman t-shirt as his costume, and I was a whoopie cushion.  We played games and ate some yummy treats.  I’ve always seen lots of cute halloween treats in magazines and wanted to make them, so this year I tried a few new things.

We had spooky green punch made with lime sherbet and Sprite.  It was topped off with an eerie hand made from freezing tropical colada juice in a rubber glove.  We lost one of the fingers as we took the frozen hand out of the glove.  The pinky went quickly after while stirring the punch.  The juice, as it melted, made the punch extra yummy.

Because it was pretty cold that night, another beverage that we offered was spiced apple cider, made just like Chad’s mom used to make.  It was good, but it was a little warm in our house, so most opted for the sherbet punch.

There were creepy finger foods too.  I made my mom’s delicious cheeseball, but shaped it into a ghost.  I added the almonds for eyes and a mouth.  I made sausage balls and inserted rice noodles to make them spider-like.  Their eyes were just food coloring.  There were also mummies, cocktail wieners wrapped mummy-style with crescents.  Chad added the eyes with mustard.  We also sliced up some full size hotdogs and cooked them to make tasty worms.

It wouldn’t be Halloween without treats.  I made rice krispy treats, colored them with food coloring, and shaped them into balls.  The color was a little pinkish, so I had the idea of shaping them like brains.  However, when I asked Chad how they looked, he thought they were butts.  So, I added M & Ms and chocolate chips to make them look like jack-o-lanterns.  I also found a good Chex mix recipe made with Chex, M & Ms, pretzels, candy corn, and raisins coated in white chocolate.  It’s very addicting.  Along with those treats, we also had trick-or-treat candy, and our friend Jenny brought a ridiculous cookie pizza with peanut butter, nuts, icing, and M & Ms.  It wasn’t just ridiculous because it was good, but it was also the size of a large pizza.

It was a very fun night filled with lots of good eating.  Now, I must prepare for Christmas goodies.

Cumberland Falls

On the way home from Gatlinburg, our GPS took us north on I75, which allowed for a perfect little stop along the way.  I have to mention that it was the most gorgeous day on Wednesday.  The sun was bright, not a cloud in the sky, and a cool crisp air.  The drive was beautiful, but we knew we didn’t have to rush home, so we thought we would take a short detour to Cumberland Falls.  It was not very far off course at all.

We parked and walked to the falls.  It was so pretty with the bright sun causing a rainbow.  The whole park was beautiful, and we saw more fall colors in the leaves than we did in Gatlinburg.  The only eyesore was all the trash that had been collected along the banks.  We read that it had all come from people in the park throwing trash in the water and it catching up stream.  They do clean-ups throughout the year and it still collects that much trash.  It’s just crazy to think about.  I hope it was all just an accident because I would hate to think people just throw trash into a river whenever they are done with it.  We walked and took pictures, toured the gift shop, and then sat on some rocks by the water.  It was so gorgeous and a nice way to enjoy the beautiful fall weather.  Here are some pictures from that gorgeous day.

Gatlinburg

After leaving Atlanta, Chad and I drove to Gatlinburg for a few days of fun.  We both had been before, but this was the first time going together.  It was a great fall trip.  We got to our condo where we were staying.  It was Bent Creek Golf Village.  The place was nice, but we don’t really golf and it was about 11 miles from the town.  The condo was, however, very spacious and cute.  Best of all, it had a fireplace that we really took advantage of.

That Sunday night, we didn’t do much.  After we checked out the condo, we headed to the main street in Gatlinburg and drove for a bit looking at everything.  We drove to Pigeon Forge and had dinner at the Smokey Mountain Brewery, which had been recommended to us by a couple different people.  Chad had the buffalo chicken pizza and liked it a lot.  I had a calzone that was pretty good too.  It was rainy when we left there, but we looked around the Christmas Place and picked up a few things from Kroger.  At Kroger, we talked to a lady who we thought was in an information booth.  We mentioned we were interested in going to the Dixie Stampede, so she told us that we could get tickets for free if we go to a presentation for a resort.  We talked about it, and decided that 2 hours of our time was worth the $90 it would cost to buy the tickets, so we signed up for the next morning.

At 9:30 the next morning, we were at the presentation, ready to say no thank you as much as we needed to.  I was surprised to find out that the sales people meet with us by ourselves and not in a large group.  I thought I could play on my phone during a presentation, but this was more like an interview or a friendly chat.  We ended up staying there for 3 hours, but we got our tickets.  I didn’t find the experience all that bad until it started to get to hour 2, then I was ready to go.  We toured one of the resorts, and I felt like we were walking way too slow.  Then, at the end, we had to wait for a manager for a while because they were all busy.  It was interesting to find out about timeshares and how they work with the point system.  We are actually looking to find out more about them.  There was just no way that we were going to commit to something that day.

After we left there, we had lunch at McAllister’s and headed to Cade’s Cove.  This was a trail that you drive around to see historic buildings, beautiful landscape, and wild animals.  The hopes were that we would get to see a bear, but no such luck.  The animals that we saw were squirrels, a dear, chipmunks, and turkeys that trotted in front of our car as they crossed the street.  It was a lovely day and the tour was pretty fun.

Next, we headed back to town and stopped at Laurel Falls.  This was suggested by my dad as a place that we should go, so we decided to check it out.  We had to hike 1.3 miles up to the falls, but it wasn’t too bad, and we had some lovely chats along the way.  I was surprised how close you could actually get to the waterfalls.  You could take a shower in it if you wanted.

As we got back in town, we parked so that we could walk around and enjoy all the things to see and shops to go in.  We had dinner at No Way Jose’s, which was pretty good and fast.  We walked around and shopped, not really buying anything except for a few candy treats.  We also rode the Sky Lift.  It was fun to see from such a high point, and it was cute how nervous Chad was at first.  At the top, they take your picture.  Chad and I kissed for our picture, and it was really cute, but we didn’t spend the $14  it cost to get it.  You’ll just have to imagine how cute it was.  We walked what we felt was the entire strip and then headed back to the car.  Ober Gatlinburg was closed, but we talked about going back so we could ride the Alpine Slide.  That would have been fun, but I actually forgot about it until just now.

The next day, we went to the Tanger Outlet to shop around.  There were so many stores, we were there for hours.  We took a break for lunch at the Chop House.  It was good food, but I think I ate too much.  We probably should have split something.  While shopping, I purchased 3 sweaters and a couple of sportswear items.  I think I got a good deal on them.  Chad didn’t find anything that was worth his money, but then again, he doesn’t like to spend money on clothes.  I actually found plenty of things that I wanted, but there weren’t as many good buys as I had hoped for.

That evening, Chad and I went to the Dixie Stampede.  I had been before when I was in high school, and I remembered it as being kind of fun, but Chad had never been.  So, with our free tickets, we went.  We weren’t supposed to take pictures, but we got a few before the show began.  It was a fun experience.  All of the food (a whole chicken, a slice of pork tenderloin, corn on the cob, creamy vegetable soup, a cheddar biscuit, and an apple turnover) had to be eaten without any silverware.  They sat us on the South side of the arena and we were in competition with the North side.  There was a show with horses and pigs and chickens to watch as we ate.  There was music too, but I was disappointed that not all of it was live.  I thought it was very obvious that most of the people were lip syncing.  There were goofy things that they did and we cheered on the south.  It was a good, fun time- right up our alley.

After the show, we went back to our condo and went swimming and hot-tubbing.  We had lots of fun playing around in the pool and then relaxing in the hot tub.

The next morning was check out and time to leave.  All of the garbage cans outside had been overturned, and a guy cleaning up told me that they had 3 little bears who got into them.  I’m sad we missed our chance to see a bear, but I’m glad we didn’t run into them on the way back from the pool.  It was wonderful to get away with Chad for a while and really spend some good time together.  We enjoyed our time in Gatlinburg so much, and I’m sure we will be back again.
